Title: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies; exploring genetic risk factors and pathogenesis
Speaker: Dr Janine Lamb, University of Manchester
Abstract: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM, myositis) are rare, heterogeneous immune-mediated inflammatory conditions. The disease course includes multi-organ involvement, such as musculoskeletal, lung, heart and skin disease. In addition to disease related manifestations, patients also suffer an increased risk of comorbid conditions such as cancer and ischemic heart disease. Diagnostic delays, inaccurate diagnoses and difficulty in recognising active disease contribute to poor outcomes. In myositis, many patients respond poorly to existing treatments and are permanently disabled due to irreversible muscle damage, resulting in considerably reduced quality of life.
This presentation will highlight research by our Manchester Myositis Research Group, to increase understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of myositis. There will be a focus on genetic and environmental risk factors, myositis autoantibodies, and the relationship to comorbid conditions such as cancer.
Location: St Mary’s Hospital, Oxford Road, Manchester.
