Effective treatments are currently not available for 95% of rare conditions.
The vision of the MRCC’s R&I theme is to build on Manchester’s global reputation as a centre of research excellence in rare conditions and enable significant breakthroughs in this field. The MRCC is leveraging the impressive research ecosystem in Manchester to achieve this goal, partnering with the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre’s dedicated rare conditions theme and leading or co-leading three of the Medical Research Council (MRC)/NIHR UK Rare Disease Research Platform nodes.
In the years 2022-2024, Manchester researchers have contributed to around 250 publications related to RCs and attracted research grant income of over £15 million.
